Aanpak Ring Zuid (Approach Ring South) is the large scale reconstruction of the southern ring road in Groningen. Over a total length of 12 kilometers, major changes were necessary to accommodate the growing traffic volumes. It goes without saying that this is an intensive process with significant impacts on stakeholders and commuters alike.
Effective communication with stakeholders is key in projects like this. Information and dialogue help to create support, reduce misunderstandings, and prevent conflicts ultimately contributing to a smoother process.

What made this project particularly special was that we were involved right from the conceptual phase. Using our tools, we were able to visualize various scenarios in a highly realistic manner clearly illustrating their potential impact. As a result, all discussions were based on the same, shared understanding. There was no more ambiguity: the impact was clearly visible.
Throughout the process, we maintained close and direct communication with our client, ensuring we were always up to date with the latest changes. These were immediately translated into updated visuals. Ultimately, we delivered a visualization that made the final plans accessible to everyone.

One highlight was the delivery of a scale model and MapTable in June 2023. Thanks to the integration of the MapTable and scale model into the Ring Zuid Groningen information center, we successfully combined online and offline participation. This was commissioned by the Aanpak Ring Zuid project organization. The Imagineers facilitated the successful delivery of the MapTable—an innovative tool that bridges interactive public participation with modern technology.
The MapTable offers an ideal interface between online and offline engagement, enabling us to present content from the Area Participation Platform directly on-site. This includes not just written information, but also actual photos of construction activities. This allows for detailed progress reporting and enables stakeholders and the wider public to stay actively involved in the project’s development.
Results:
The visualization was integrated into the project website and linked directly to the content. Every resident or interested party can now explore what’s happening, where it’s happening, and what it will look like—just a few clicks away.
