An example where an SEP has been very successful is the project to improve the accessibility of Wageningen. The Province of Gelderland wanted to work together with the municipality of Wageningen to enhance accessibility by modifying existing roads. The SEP is part of the province’s communication toolkit to involve residents and other stakeholders at various stages. This way, they can gather wishes and needs regarding road design, nature, landscape integration, and more. Respondents can pinpoint exact locations on the map where they want to highlight concerns or provide input. Both the feedback and how it has been incorporated into the road design are presented in a clear, attractive, and realistic manner. This makes it easy to track how the road design evolves over time and how the wishes and needs of interested parties are addressed.

Thanks to the SEP, all input has resulted in clearly collected concerns and wishes. Additionally, the information is presented in an appealing way—photorealistic. The valuable input helped continuously adjust and improve the preliminary design, allowing for better alignment with the desires and needs of the local community.

An SEP provides:
  • A structured way of collaborating and communicating among all involved parties, which significantly increases the chances of a project’s success.
  • More transparency and trust among all parties, resulting in better cooperation.
  • Providing a wealth of information that can be used to monitor the progress of the project and make adjustments where necessary.
